Satellite Image Shows Mount Etna Spewing Lava From Above

Handout photo dated June 2, 2025, shows The Copernicus Sentinel-2C satellite acquired an image of the area at 09:40 UTC, just minutes after the onset of the eruption. On the left, the natural colour image clearly depicts a dense ash plume in the summit crater area, partially obscured by a pyrocumulus cloud drifting westward towards inland Sicily. On the right, a false colour composite using shortwave infrared channels reveals the intense thermal signature of active lava flows descending into the Valle del Bove. Jaw-dropping satellite images shows Mount Etna erupting. At 11:24 am local time on 2 June, the most active volcano in Europe produced a spectacular eruption, propelling a dense column of ash and smoke several kilometres into the atmosphere. According to Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the eruption originated from the South East Crater, one of the most active summit vents in recent years. The event was characterised by vigorous Strombolian activity, lava effusion, and a

Volcanic Alert Raised for Mt. Zao in Northeastern Japan

Miyagi and Yamagata, Japan -Jan. 30: Japan's weather agency raised Tuesday the alert level for Mt. Zao, a volcano near a popular ski area in northeastern Japan, citing the detection of volcanic tremors and warning of the possibility of a small eruption. The alert on a scale of five has been raised from 1, which only indicates the "potential" for increased activity, to 2, a level advising People to refrain from approaching the crater, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The agency warned that an area within an approximately 1.2-kilometer radius of the crater could see rocks raining down from above if a small eruption occurs. Mt. Zao straddles the border between prefectures of Miyagi and Yamagata. According to the weather agency, volcanic tremors, caused by movements of hot subterranean water and volcanic gas, were observed over a period of 31 minutes from 2:18 p.m. on Tuesday and were larger than those recorded on Sunday and early Tuesday morning.

Weeding a rice field at Aso Valley

The caldera area of Aso has been used to grow rice since the Yayoi Period. According to myth, the deity of the volcano, Takeiwawatatsunomikoto, built the first rice paddy here. The photograph captures the Asodani area with the central crater located on the north side of Aso Gogaku (the five mountains of Aso) as viewed from the east. The area is commonly referred to as Aso no Senmaida ( Thousand fields of Aso ) with many narrow rice paddies one after another. At present, the farmed area has been redesigned in an arrangement of square rice paddies.==Date:1904, Place:Kumamoto, Photo:Underwood, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number97‐3‐0]
